The Society is privileged to have Luiz Pimenta, MD, PhD, provide leadership as SOLAS Executive Chairman. Dr. Pimenta's contributions to the development and continued advancement of lateral access surgery are well recognized and inspirational. NuVasive^® support of the Society is led by Bryan Cornwall, Eng, PhD, SOLAS Executive Managing Director.

Within the SOLAS organization, society-related activities include research, surgeon education, and patient education. Activities are conducted within Applications Committees and Study Groups (i.e., Research & Communication and Surgeon Education Committees, Deformity, Degenerative, Motion Preservation, and Trauma Study Groups). Chaired by leading experts in their fields, committee members take an active role in data collection and publication, and serve SOLAS members by driving initiatives such as surgical technique requirements, clinical training requirements and publication strategies.

Committee and Study Group chairmen drive the evolution of lateral access surgery. New members are encouraged to apply, and will be evaluated based on active participation and productivity for nomination for the Board of Directors through Committee and Study Group Chairmanships.

Clinical and pre-clinical research is one of the key initiatives of the Society. SOLAS members — representing the leaders in the field of lateral access surgery — will drive the direction, implementation, and publication of all XLIF-related research through participation in Application Study Groups (Degenerative, Deformity, Motion, and Trauma).

Research projects completed to date, those still ongoing, and those planned include anatomic and biomechanical studies, retrospective clinical chart reviews (both single-center and multi-center), prospective non-randomized, and prospective randomized clinical trials. Topics of interest generally include peri- and post-operative minimally disruptive benefits, long-term clinical and radiographic evaluations, comparisons between techniques, comparisons among indications, etc.

Members collaborate on projects around each study topic, at respective committee meetings, and at the SOLAS Research Meeting, held annually in San Diego.
